Why Platform Fees Vary So Much Between Creator Platforms

The headline percentage a platform advertises is rarely the whole story. Monthly fees, processing costs, and payout minimums often matter more than the number on the pricing page.

Ask five creators what their platform "takes" and you'll often get five different answers — not because they're wrong, but because platform pricing is rarely just one number.

The headline percentage isn't the whole fee

A platform advertising "10% commission" can still cost a creator more than one advertising "15%," once you add in a monthly subscription fee, a separate payment processing charge, and a currency conversion fee on payout. The commission is usually the most visible number precisely because it's the one platforms want you comparing.

Where the extra cost usually hides

Three places are worth checking before assuming a percentage is the full picture: whether there's a monthly or annual fee charged regardless of sales, whether payment processing is bundled into the commission or billed separately, and whether there's a minimum payout threshold or a rolling reserve that delays access to money you've already earned.

Why some platforms can charge less

Platforms with lower headline fees are often lighter-weight by design — fewer built-in discovery or community features, fewer moderation and support layers, less infrastructure to fund. That's not automatically worse for a creator who already has their own audience and just needs a fast, reliable way to get paid, rather than a platform to be discovered on.

What to actually compare

The fairest comparison is what lands in your account per €100 of sales, after every fee — commission, processing, and any subscription cost divided across a typical month's sales — not the single percentage printed on the pricing page.

Frequently asked

Is a 0% commission platform actually free?

Rarely in practice. Platforms advertising 0% commission on sales typically make it up through a mandatory monthly subscription, a separate payment processing fee, or both — so the real cost still needs to be calculated per sale, not assumed to be zero.

Does a lower fee always mean a better deal?

Not necessarily — it depends what the fee includes. A slightly higher all-in commission with no monthly fee and no payout minimum can work out cheaper overall than a lower headline percentage stacked with extra charges.
